Publicly the Palestinian Authority will accuse Israel of indiscriminately targeting civilians, including children, in time of war, thus fueling the Jewish state’s detractors abroad. But among themselves, the Palestinians agree with Israel that in the recent Gaza wars, Hamas and its terrorist allies deliberately put children in harm’s way by using them as cover for military activities.

A month ago, the Fatah Commission of Information and Culture published a political cartoon mocking Hamas for using Palestinian children as human shields. Fatah is the ruling faction in the Palestinian Authority.

The cartoon was made known to a wider audience by Palestinian Media Watch.

Hamas has in the past defended its use of human shields by stating that the Palestinian people seek and welcome death in service to the cause of defeating Israel.

While recent Gaza wars have featured a tragic number of civilian casualties thanks to Hamas’ deplorable tactics, the numbers could have been much higher if not for Israel’s restraint.

In the May 2020 conflict, the Israel Air Force released footage and audio recordings of its pilots calling off airstrikes on Hamas positions after spotting children playing nearby.
