It’s become something of a running joke among Israelis that any time the Jewish state excels in something, the Palestinians will no doubt claim to have done it first. The broad field of agriculture is no different. In fact, according to the official Palestinian Authority-run newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, the Palestinian Arabs invented agriculture! And that somehow before there even were Arabs, who claim descent from Ishmael, who clearly lived long after the discover of agriculture.
But pesky historical facts, let alone common sense, don’t often bother the mainstream Palestinian media.
In a February 2015 issue of the Al-Asima bi-weekly insert distributed with Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, the Palestinian Authority had the gall to assert, “The study of the prehistoric period is based on archeological remains from the caves of Palestine. The bones of the early Palestinian man found there prove that he was walking upright… During the New Stone Age (5,000-8,000 BCE), the Palestinians discovered agriculture and built the town of Jericho, the most ancient city humanity has known, and domesticated animals.”
