At the beginning of January, 46 large sea turtles were found stranded on the coast of Israel.

The animals were injured. Fortunately for them, Israel is home to a sea turtle rescue center. Sadly though, only 15 of the animals could be saved.

About 250 sea turtles are found stranded on Israeli beaches over the course of an average year. This particularly large group showed up over just three days. The rescue team was overburdened, but a great many people turned up to volunteer. They were tasked not only with scouring the area, but also with helping to carry these incredibly-heavy animals to a field hospital set up on the beach. Those turtles that did make it thanks to Israeli care have a good chance of long-term survival. After their rehabilitation, the turtles will be released back into the sea.
