Nitzana Darshan-Leitner, president of the Shurat HaDin Law Center, recently addressed the Netanya AACI on the topic “Gaza, Harvard, The Hague: Legal Street Fights in the Wake of October 7.” In her talk, she recounted the events of that fateful day and how her organization has been at the forefront of the legal battle on behalf of the victims ever since.
“On October 7, at 6:30 a.m., Hamas fired 5,000 rockets into Israel. Simultaneously, Hamas neutralized Israel’s surveillance systems, cameras, and automated rifles — $2 billion worth of security measures Israel had invested in the Gaza-bordering kibbutzim. They invaded Israel in three waves,” Darshan-Leitner explained.
She elaborated that the first wave consisted of the Nukba terrorists: “This is Hamas’ elite command unit. Well-trained, having prepared for about a year in Iran, they knew exactly how to enter Israel and where to go. They broke through the fence at 30 different points, infiltrating not only the kibbutzim but also the junctions where the IDF was supposed to block them.”
