Why does Cairo suddenly care so much about Rafah and the Palestinians? The truth is, it doesn’t.

The Egyptian government has committed itself to no other city in the Gaza Strip as much as Rafah… not Gaza City, not Jabalia, not Khan Yunis, not Zeitoun. Egypt has joined the South African lawsuit against Israel over the operation in Rafah. Because of Rafah, Egypt threatens to recall its ambassador from Tel Aviv. Is Egypt perhaps afraid of what Israel might find underground in Rafah?

Let’s take a look at why Israel’s peace partner to the south is losing its nerve over the Gaza border town.
