The city of Dubai boasts unparalleled luxury and wealth. In recent years, Dubai has become a booming free trade zone, while developing infrastructure and projects unprecedented in size and power. The rulers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have also turned Dubai into a tourist attraction for visitors from around the world.
Up until the 1960s, Dubai, located on the northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, was a simple fishing village whose inhabitants made their living from fish and pearl oysters.
Successful political management by the emirates’ tribal chiefs, and liberation from British rule in 1971, led to the establishment of a union of seven provinces. It is a sovereign federation in which each hereditary emirate is governed by a sheikh.
Discovery of oil and gas deposits suddenly provided a source of immense wealth. The new wealth, along with prudent political conduct in the face of dangers and threats from neighboring countries (Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq), have made the UAE a neutral power that maintains broad commercial/economic ties.
