Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington on Sunday to meet with President Donald Trump on Monday. The meeting may take place Monday evening as a dinner – not in the Oval Office with subsequent press statements. Whether there will be a press conference before or after the meeting remains unclear.
If it is indeed an intimate dinner without public statements at the White House, it suggests Trump wants to first discuss key issues regarding the war’s end and his plans to expand the Abraham Accords – including normalization with Saudi Arabia – privately with Netanyahu. In return, he is likely to expect an “Israeli concession” before any official announcements.
Last night, Netanyahu convened a dramatic security cabinet meeting, where he briefed the ministers on his plans for the Washington trip. The Qatari mediation initiative was also discussed, and the framework for the Israeli delegation, set to travel to Doha for indirect talks, was established.
