In January 2026, the possibility that the United States under President Donald Trump might attack Iran is at the center of international debate. A wave of massive protests that began in late December 2025 – against the background of the dramatic collapse of the national currency (rial), galloping inflation, severe shortages of electricity and water, and a general economic crisis – quickly developed into an open revolt against the regime. The protests spread to dozens of cities – including Tehran, Isfahan, and Mashhad – as well as to ethnic regions such as Kurdistan, Baluchistan, and Ahwaz.
The regime responded with brutal force: live gunfire, mass arrests, an almost complete internet blackout, and reports of thousands killed. Estimates – according to organizations such as HRANA, Iran International, and Amnesty International – range from 2,000 to 30,000 victims, including hundreds of children.
