Orthodox Jews are in a panic. In an open letter, the Council of Top Torah Scholars has called on Naftali Bennett’s right-wing Yamina party not to form a coalition covenant left-wing Jewish parties under any circumstances. “How can you consider yourself to be believing Jews,” the rabbis reproached. “Should a government coalition like this come about, it is an affront to heaven, a bitter and grave sin. This is an evil government and anyone who contributes to the formation of such a government has no share or inheritance with the God of Israel in heaven.”
Orthodox rabbis and Knesset Members say that Arab MK Mansour Abbas, a Muslim, is likely to be the most religious person in the new so-called “coalition of change,” referring to the end of Netanyahu’s reign if they manage to pull together a majority. The reason? All the other Jews in the coalition are not pious enough, from their point of view, and they do not want to cooperate with “secular” Jews.
