After becoming fascinated by Shimon Meir’s laser-sharp YouTube videos and his book in Hebrew, I asked to interview him for Israel Today. On a warm day in late June I drove across the eastern end of the Jezreel Valley to meet him, past alternating fields of gold and green, past Mt. Tabor, past Nazareth, to sit down with Shimon for a salad near Gideon’s Spring. Feeling like a schoolboy meeting a hero, I grilled this Orthodox Israeli man.
He grew up in religious orthodoxy, but was not taught a rational, logical basis for the existence of the God of Israel, and thus became skeptical. His questions regarding life and faith took him on an intellectual journey, starting in his high school days, leading him to range far and wide in thought, taking in broad swaths of opinion – from Orthodox Jewish to materialistic, from ancient Greek philosophers to modern Christian philosophers, to intelligent design scientists.
