In a somewhat surreal press conference in Washington, US President Donald Trump presented a new peace plan to end the war between Israel and Hamas—backed by Qatari and Egyptian mediation. The so-called “Basic Document” plan encompasses 20 points and aims to enable the release of all hostages, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of a new governing structure. While Qatar signaled to the Americans that Hamas might possibly agree, leading representatives of Hamas and Islamic Jihad express deep skepticism. The central question remains: Will Hamas accept the offer—and if so, under what conditions?
A vague draft, or an unfinished concept?
The plan presented by Trump is deliberately kept general to allow Hamas to agree without overly concrete commitments. It includes the release of all hostages—living and dead—the destruction of tunnels, weapons workshops, and rockets, and the establishment of a new administration, possibly involving a reformed Palestinian Authority. However, clear timelines or deadlines are lacking, raising doubts among many observers about whether it’s more of a “half-baked”...
