The Israeli Army announced Saturday evening the deaths of two soldiers in separate operations in southern Lebanon. Captain Shachar Gamla from Natur in the Golan died on Saturday from his severe injuries after an attack with an explosive drone by Hezbollah. Sergeant Ohad Yaari from Rehovot was killed during operational activity in southern Lebanon in a fatal accident.
Gamla, 24, served as deputy company commander in the elite Egoz Unit of the Commando Brigade. He was severely wounded in a Hezbollah drone attack on Thursday night and died in the hospital on Saturday. The Golan Regional Council announced with great sorrow that Gamla was deeply rooted in the soil of the Golan and loved this community very much. He was the son of Yishai and Leah and the older brother of Rotem and Nitzan.
Especially moving: The family chose to donate his organs, thereby continuing to save the lives of others. The Regional Council expressed its condolences to the family, as well as to the extended relatives in Keshet and the community in Natur. Gamla’s funeral will take place on Sunday in Moshav Keshet.
Sergeant Ohad Yaari, 21, served in the Shaked Battalion of the Givati Brigade. The Army confirmed that he was fatally wounded during an operation in southern Lebanon. The military investigation will examine this accident. Yaari’s funeral will take place on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at the military cemetery in Rehovot.
Yaari was the nephew of Yehoshua Sherman, father of Yehuda Shmuel Sherman, who was killed about two months earlier in a terrorist attack in northern Samaria. The city of Rehovot expressed its deep condolences to the Yaari family and called on the public to come with Israeli flags along the route to the cemetery and pay Yaari final respects.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu honored both soldiers as “among our finest sons” and emphasized that their courage and sacrifice will be forever etched in hearts. He expressed his deep condolences to the Gamla and Yaari families and said: “May their memory be a blessing.”
President Donald Trump urged Netanjahu on June 1st in a difficult phone call not to attack Beirut and to stop the fights in southern Lebanon. Since then, Hezbollah attacks have significantly decreased. But despite the fourth round of talks between Israel, Lebanon, and the United States in Washington on June 2, Hezbollah rejected the agreement and continues to carry out rocket, drone, and explosive drone attacks.
