While the vote was non-binding, the decision in May by Germany’s parliament to adopt a resolution entitled “Resisting the BDS Movement Decisively-Fighting Antisemitism” was a watershed. The motion marked the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement as not only a means of protesting the Jewish state, but as a crusade against Jews everywhere. It also acknowledged for the first time that the political left is plagued by antisemitism no less, and perhaps even more than the extreme right.
The resolution will no doubt challenge in unprecedented ways support for BDS, and increase the public’s apathy toward efforts to boycott Israel. As for the government, the document insists that it “not provide premises and facilities under the administration of the Bundestag to organizations that express themselves in antisemitic terms or question Israel’s right to exist.” This clause is heavily substantiated by NGO Monitor, which has for years documented the BDS movement’s true goals, as well as who’s funding and partnering with it.
