When a Jewish nurse breast-fed a Palestinian baby it hit headlines all over the world.

Ola Ostrowsky-Zak (34), a nurse at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, did not hesitate to provide a mother’s care to 9-month-old Jaman after his own mother fell into a coma following a devastating car accident that killed the baby’s father. This is not an exception in the Land, but it is an exception to see positive news reporting about Israel abroad.

 

“I breast-fed Jaman as if he were my own son,” Ola explained to Israel Today. During her shift in the Intensive Care Unit, Ola received the injured Palestinians after their terrible accident between Jerusalem and Hebron. “At first I was focused on caring for the severely injured mother. Then I suddenly heard a baby crying and saw that he was also injured. He didn’t want to drink from a bottle and was starving,” she recalled. When other members of the family from Hebron were called to the hospital, the baby’s aunts searched desperately for a wet-nurse. “As a breast-feeding mother my first instinct was to offer myself,” said Ola....
