The Golan Heights are more than a geostrategic vantage point; they are a symbol of the unresolved Middle East conflict, a reminder of past wars, and a litmus test for future peace visions. For Syria, they are a national heritage; for Israel, a security lifeline. Yet, within this tension lies a rare opportunity: a historic compromise that could make the immovable movable. What if not surrender, but leasing, became the diplomatic key? A solution that allows both sides to save face – Damascus keeps the flag on paper, Jerusalem retains control on the ground. An idea as old as King Solomon, who once “leased” cities for strategic advantages. Today, this biblical precedent could be reinterpreted – as realpolitik cloaked in history.

The Golan Heights are not up for grabs, at least not officially. Even the new government in Damascus cannot easily relinquish them. Yet, if Jerusalem is serious about peace, a diplomatic way out could be found for this sensitive issue.
