When Yaron Shenhav (picture) was sweating in his Tel Aviv apartment in the middle of summer, his air conditioner trying and failing to provide any relief, he came up with an idea for a product that would make his company one of the hottest start-ups in Israel.
Together with Gadi Grottas and Professor Guy Ron of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Shenhav founded the company SolCold. According to the company’s website: “SolCold is developing a unique material, no thicker than a business card. Once applied to a surface of an object, the sun’s radiation triggers a reaction in our material. This reaction converts the heat accumulated in the object it is applied to – into radiation. This radiation is then emitted in a process called ‘anti-stokes fluorescence’, thus providing the cooling effect.
