US President Donald Trump hosted an impressive summit in Washington with dozens of heads of state and government from around the world. There, he announced the raising of seven billion dollars in donations for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. In addition, he declared that the United States itself will provide ten billion dollars for this “historic mission.”
The pledges come primarily from Gulf states: the United Arab Emirates with 1.2 billion dollars, Qatar with one billion, Saudi Arabia also with one billion, and Kuwait with another billion. Representatives of the Peace Council stated that the financing is sufficient to immediately launch the reconstruction project.
For the Americans, it was important to demonstrate progress—despite reports that the Peace Council has stalled and Washington is having difficulty assembling the international stabilization force (ISF).
The designated ISF commander, General Jasper Jeffers, announced for the first time which five states want to contribute soldiers: Indonesia with up to 8,000 soldiers and an option for increase, as well as Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania—all Muslim-majority states.
