Israel often makes no sense—and that is exactly what irritates the nations. Over the last few years, this has become increasingly clear to me. When the war with Iran broke out, our family was stranded in Thailand. We were waiting for EL AL rescue flights—not to flee, but to get back into the war zone. One of my sons had remained in Israel, serving in Gaza, while his wife was nine months pregnant. My two other sons were called up while in Thailand and mobilized that same day for a tour of duty in Lebanon.
Show me another people on earth that immediately returns home the moment rockets are falling and war is raging there. Normally, people flee a war zone—we fly into it. That defies all human logic. The Thais could not understand it: Why would anyone want to go exactly where rockets are raining down? They are right—it cannot be explained rationally. But that very irrational attachment to home is what defines Israel and drives the rest of the world up the wall.
