No self-respecting Arab newspaper is without an in-house cartoonist. And, more often than not, their work is blatantly hostile toward Israel. So, the Israel Foreign Ministry has decided to fight fire with fire.
The Ministry’s Media and Information Department recently contracted Israeli cartoonist Nimrod Reshef, known locally as “Nimi,” who is also a popular musician, actor and chairman of the Israeli Cartoon Association. Reshef began working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about six months ago, when he was tasked with producing a series of political cartoons aimed at the wider Arab world.
Reshef’s pieces seek to counter many of the, often outlandish, lies about Israel that characterize most Arab press caricatures. For instance, one illustration shows how it is Hamas that is the real detriment to Gaza by cynically using the civilian population as a shield. Another features Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah trying to explain away Israel’s selfless aid to victims of Syria’s civil war.
