This is not the first time that Israel has been in a crisis situation. What stimulates Israel’s history are its constant emergencies, which make the people turn toward God.

In Psalm 69 we read clearly and distinctly of such a time of crisis and distress for the people of Israel. I came across the psalm with friends during dinner. We were amazed at how this biblical text speaks to Israel, especially in these days. Are there parallels to Jesus in it? The psalm begins with the words of King David, who turns to God in his difficult moments, in a situation in which all hope seems lost. He begs for God’s intervention, because “the water comes close to my soul.” The situation is so bad that there is a risk of drowning. The psalmist emphasizes his own repentance and his trust in God’s mercy and salvation.

David’s words are more relevant in our time than we might think. First we must recognize and admit that we are in distress. But then also understand that we should ask for God’s grace and salvation. We should not avoid punishing our enemies, but demand it from God. And in the end we should praise and thank God for His salvation. This...
