Israeli Natalia Mendel has been appointed as head of the UN Relations Department, making her one of the highest-ranked Israeli members of the international body.
After 15 years of working in the UN serving in a variety of roles, Mendel accepted the prestigious position in which she will oversee business intelligence and the facilitation of cooperation between business suppliers around the world.
In recent months, Israel has been working behind the scenes to promote Mendel to the position, citing her skills and experience in the field. This was also seen as an opportunity for Secretary General Antonio Guterres to promote women to leadership positions in the organization.
Today, there are 103 Israelis working in the UN, with 29 of them in top positions. Alongside Mendel there is another senior Israeli representative serving in one of the sensitive and secret roles in the organization. David Zechariah, a lawyer by profession, currently serves as head of the research body in the executive arm of the Security Council.
Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said that Mendel’s success brings great pride to the Jewish state. “We will continue with our duty to increase the number of Israelis employed in the UN and continue to break every glass ceiling that would prevent their advancement within the organization,” he said.
