Selina Steinfeld, 86, was this week crowned “Most Beautiful Holocaust Survivor” at the Friends of Zion Museum in Jerusalem. The beauty contest was organized by the non-profit foundation Yad Ezer L’Haver (Helping Hand). It has been running now for several years, but was last held in 2018.
Ten finalists were selected from hundreds of applicants. From the organizers to popular singer Rotem Cohen, everyone participated free of charge. The event is primarily intended to boost Holocaust remembrance as the number of survivors continues to dwindle. The jurors included the incumbent Miss Israel, Noa Kochba, and Lea Schenirer. Schenirer represented the second generation of Holocaust survivors. She takes part in activities to commemorate the Holocaust around the world. Her mother survived cruel experiments by Mengele.
Steinfeld herself survived the Holocaust as a child in Romania and immigrated in 1948 to Israel, where she married and gave birth to three children. She has seven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
