Israel’s normalization deals with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain continue to expose the Palestinian Authority as the true obstacle to peace in the region.

It’s understandable, from their point of view, why the Palestinians oppose these deals, which greatly reduce the leverage previously wielded by the PA. They had previously been able to dangle the possibility of normalization with the rest of the Arab world as a carrot to entice Israeli concessions, and as a means of encouraging the international community to put more pressure on Israel for the sake of regional stability.

But the absolutist religious rhetoric being employed by the Palestinians reveals that they never really desired peace. As they put it, Allah forbids any such rapprochement with the Jews and their state.

Last week, the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Religious Affairs issued a memo that outlined approved Friday sermons for mosques located in territories under its control.

Now, remembering that in the Muslim Middle East there is no separation of religion and state, these approved sermons focused almost entirely on the political matter of peace agreements with Jews and Zionists. When a Muslim government wants to drive home a point among its own people, it does so through the mosques.

The memo in question was translated by Palestinian Media Watch, and informed local Muslim preachers the following:

  • There is nothing that harms Palestine and its holy sites more than making an alliance with the Jews, being connected to them, and relying on them.
  • Normalization with the Zionist entity is high treason against Palestine, Jerusalem, the blood of the Martyrs, and the suffering of the prisoners.
  • Obedience to the Jews and being dragged after them will lead the nation to weakness, lawlessness, humiliation, and shame.
  • Concentrating all the energies to reject normalization and relations with the Zionist entity.

The PA Ministry of Religious Affairs included several verses from the Koran and the Hadith to back up these points, among them this little gem:

“And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, ‘Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the only guidance.’ If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.” Sura 2:120

So, what we can deduce from this is that the Palestinian Authority believes that any manner of “connection” to or alignment with Jews (not just the State of Israel, but JEWS) is a path to ruin. And in this world, those who walk such a path will be treated as traitors. In the world to come, they will face the wrath of Allah.

The memo was signed by the PA’s Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Husam Abu Al-Rub, meaning it came right from the top.

These are hardly the pronouncements of a genuine peace partner. And what’s worse, they are forcing local mosques to further brainwash the Palestinian population to view any kind of reconciliation with Jewish Israel as a violation of their Islamic faith. This is the kind of obstacle to peace that no amount of international mediation, or Israeli concessions, can ever overcome.
