For Israel’s coastal city of Tel Aviv, the government gave the green light for a preemptive strike in Lebanon, but not for a border region in the Upper Galilee. In many ways, this doesn’t make sense. Northern Israel, including Galilee and the Golan Heights, has been relentlessly bombarded for months, yet there are no dramatic bombings in Lebanon. But something else needs to be mentioned: the DNA of Israeli society is probably not the same as it was in the pioneering years. Israel needs to act more decisively in its wars and hesitate less, as it did during the Six-Day War. With the preemptive war of 1967, Israel established its deterrence strategy in the Middle East. However, at that time, the young State of Israel had less to lose than it does today. And that weakens Israel in the eyes of its enemies.
