The Palestinians are far better off in Israel than many other Arab people in the Middle East, even though “they have officially been conquered by the evil Israelis.” Often enough, Palestinians make it clear to me how happy they are to live under Israeli rule. But when we write that, it’s often not taken seriously and it doesn’t convince anyone.

I can understand that everyone would like to live in their own homeland and not under foreign rule. This is normal human behavior. But what if life in the homeland is worse than under occupation? The people of the Arab nations in Israel’s neighborhood all live freely in their homes and not under foreign occupation. But if life under foreign occupation is better than at home, what are you supposed to do about it? Would you rather live and suffer at home or live under occupation with rights and more freedom?
