Terror returned to the streets of Jerusalem overnight when an Arab gunman opened fire on a bus and a private car in the Old City after midnight Saturday. Eight people were wounded, including a pregnant woman who was seriously injured and delivered her premature child in an emergency procedure. The terror initially managed to flee the scene, but reportedly turned himself in to police a short time later.
The shooting took place at the bus depot outside the Western Wall, Judaism’s holiest site. The gunman then ran to the parking lot at Mount Zion and opened fire on a parked vehicle. Security forces launched a manhunt into the adjacent Arab neighborhood of Silwan (the biblical City of David).
The terrorist, a 28-year-old resident of eastern Jerusalem, was apprehended around 8am after reportedly taking a taxi to a local police station. It is now being investigated whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon insisted the attack would not impact day-to-day life in the Holy City:
“Jerusalem is stronger than any incident and we won’t let any terrorist harm the daily life in the public sphere.”
