We like to think that we determine our own lives. Yet if we pause for a moment and look back at the day just passed, we may find that a large part of it unfolded almost on its own: the same thoughts, the same reactions, the same fears, and the same stories we have been telling ourselves for years. Sometimes we believe we are living by free choice, while in reality we are simply continuing along paths we have long since grown accustomed to.
The first book of the Bible, Genesis, begins the story of humanity at precisely this point. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve stand before the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. One can read this story as a story about the tree, about the prohibition, or about sin. Yet beneath all of this lies one of the great questions that will accompany humanity from this moment onward: What do we do with the freedom we have been given?
God could have created a world in which human beings are programmed to do...
