We are used to thinking that the big questions of life are questions of identity: Who am I? What matters to me? Who do I want to be?

No less important than the question “Who are you?” is the question: “Where are you?” Not: Where are you physically? But rather: Where do you stand in your life? Where do you stand in relation to the person you wanted to be, to the values you believe in, to the people you love, to your faith, to yourself? Are you in the place that is right for you, or have you perhaps, without noticing it, drifted away from it? This is not a simple question. Because life allows us to keep going, even when we have long since lost our way inwardly. We can get up in the morning, work, run a household, meet people, complete tasks and function perfectly on the outside — and yet feel deep within ourselves that we are no longer truly in our rightful place.
