In the corridors of Arab capitals, people whisper about an alleged Israeli plan for a “David Corridor,” a project that seeks to turn ancient biblical designs into modern power politics. Whether it is reality or mere projection, the kingdom of King David—under whom Jerusalem was not just the center of a small people but a regional power pole—means far more to many in the Arab world than simple geopolitical fantasy. Like a ghost from the past, this purported Israeli project haunts the region: the creation of a land corridor from northern Israel, across southern Syria, all the way to the Kurdish areas of Iraq. Whether such a plan actually exists remains unclear. But the very fact that it is being discussed speaks volumes about the political tensions and historical fears in the Middle East.
