How does a family, a people, or perhaps all of humanity find its way back to unity after separation and pain? And what does reconciliation truly mean—forgetting the past, or the courageous side-by-side existence despite all differences? These are the questions posed by today’s weekly portion on the life of Sarah.
The current Torah portion on “The Life of Sarah” begins with Sarah’s death and ends with Abraham’s death. In between unfolds the full fabric of life: love, calling, faith, continuity, and reconciliation. A text that closes the circle. The feminine departs at the beginning, the masculine at the end. And in the midst of this circle comes a moving encounter—the meeting between Ishmael and Isaac.
Sarah, the great mother, leaves the world and leaves behind a void. Rebekah steps into this void, bringing new light, but true peace comes only at the end of the journey, at Abraham’s burial—not just in the tent, but in the hearts....
