Israeli society suffers from several serious rifts, but perhaps the most dangerous is the one now being highlighted amidst Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s criminal trial.

Netanyahu appeared before the Jerusalem District Court at 3 pm on Sunday for the start of his trial on charges of bribery, corruption and breach of trust.

Right-wing Israeli voters insist the charges are politically motivated and that Netanyahu is being unduly targeted by a judicial system that is overstepping its bounds. Netanyahu himself has been trumpeting that same message.

Netanyahu’s supporters say the charges against him are false, that this is a judicial coup.

Left-wing voters maintain that it is Netanyahu himself who is a danger to Israeli democracy, and that the judicial system has no choice but to convict him in order to preserve their vision for Israel’s future.

Members of the “Black Flag” protest movement gather outside the court to demand that Netanyahu resign.
