No other city in history has as many names, designations, and honorifics as the Holy City of Jerusalem. This alone reflects Jerusalem’s significance in the biblical past, in different cultures, across generations. This series presents the biblical Hebrew names of the City of David.

“For the LORD has comforted Zion, comforted all her wastelands. He will make her wilderness a paradise [Eden], and her desert a garden of God. Joy and gladness will be in her, thanksgiving and music.”

In Israel, the first name “Eden” is relatively common, for both boys and girls. Our eldest daughter is also an “Eden.”

The city of Jerusalem is also named Eden in the Bible. Jerusalem is thus like a Garden of Eden, like paradise. It is a city coveted by all peoples and religions. The name Eden evokes joy in the Bible. The Psalm says: “You will give them drink of the river of your delights.” This “your delights,” in Hebrew Adnecha (עדניך), contains the root word Eden.
