MembersGap between Jerusalem and Washington: Israel concerned over possible Iran deal

Israel’s influence in Washington is said to be declining amid fears of an agreement that could benefit Iran more than harm it.

In recent weeks, a troubling picture has begun to emerge from Israel’s perspective: the United States and Iran are moving closer to an understanding, while Jerusalem’s ability to influence US President Donald Trump appears weaker than it was at the beginning of the confrontation.

At the start of the war, the impression was that Washington and Jerusalem were acting almost as one toward Tehran. Now, however, a deep strategic rift seems to be opening between the two allies — a rift that could reshape the balance of power in the Middle East.

The growing reports of a US-Iranian declaration of intent — expected to include a ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, and the start of negotiations over the nuclear program — primarily reflect Trump’s desire to bring the crisis to an end.

From the American president’s perspective, the Gulf war has lasted much longer than planned, created significant economic pressure, and increased fears of endangering the stability of the global energy market.
