Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that the victims of what’s known as the Farhoud are not entitled to compensation under a law enacted to provide reparations to the victims of the Nazi Holocaust.
The Farhoud occurred in 1941, at the very same time that the Nazis were implementing their “Final Solution” to wipe out the Jewish people. It saw the Jews of Iraq, an ancient community dating back to the Babylonian exile, massacred in great numbers, while even more were driven out of the country and their property confiscated and looted. And though this happened in the Middle East, survivors and their descendants argue that they should be viewed as victims of the Nazi Holocaust.
