Those giant inflatable figures everyone knows so well from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City inspired a similar event on the streets of Jerusalem to kick off Hanukkah in the Israeli capital.

Some saw it as a continuing trend to commercialize Hanukkah along the lines of what the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season has become in America. Children in Israel now similarly expect decorations, presents and an abundance of sweets this time of year.
