The assessments presented to Israel’s Security Cabinet paint a clear picture: US President Donald Trump apparently wants to avoid a resumption of fighting. For him, a renewed military exchange with Iran would be only a last resort. Trump did not enter into a ceasefire only to return to war shortly afterward, officials said during the discussions.

The central question now is whether there will be any agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic — and if so, whether it will be a good agreement or a bad one. From Israel’s perspective, the current situation is not necessarily disadvantageous: According to the assessments presented, Iran is losing around $500 million per day because of the American blockade. That is a severe blow to the Iranian economy. For that reason, some in Israel view the current situation as quite favorable — regardless of whether fighting resumes or not.
