Israeli leaders on Sunday issued a sharp and unified condemnation of the shooting attack outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, after US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials were evacuated unharmed.

According to US reports, the suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen from the Los Angeles area. Authorities said he was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and knives, and is believed to have acted alone. Israeli media citing US reports noted Allen had contributed financially to the campaign of former US Vice President Kamala Harris.
A dangerous job
The attack did not breach the inner circle of American leadership. That is the good news.
The more significant point is that it exposes a growing prevalence of political violence in the West. As in other attempts on Trump, the gunman did not need to succeed in order to make the point that public life in America is now being conducted under the shadow of increasingly normalized threat.
The president himself joked about that in a press briefing shortly after the incident. Being president of the United States is “a dangerous profession,” he quipped.
PRESIDENT TRUMP: “Nobody told me this was such a dangerous profession. If Marco [Rubio] would have told me, maybe I wouldn’t have run. Maybe I would have said, ‘I’ll take a pass.'”
“It’s a dangerous profession, but I don’t view it that way. Look, I’m here to do a job.”

Israel understands this better than most. Leaders, soldiers, diplomats and civilians all live with the same hard lesson: rhetoric does not remain rhetorical forever. Eventually, someone unstable, radicalized or simply determined decides to turn the atmosphere into action.
Given Israel’s experience in this area, its leaders’ reactions were not mere diplomatic courtesy, but recognition.
America is Israel’s closest ally. When the elected leadership of the United States is targeted, Israel does not watch as a spectator. Especially under present circumstances, many in Israel see an attack on the Trump administration at least partially as an attack on the Jewish state and its future, too.
