Hundreds of Jewish residents of Samaria (so-called “settlers”) effectively besieged the Palestinian town of Nablus on Sunday after Palestinian Authority police there gave safe haven to a terrorist murderer.

Nablus, which is the biblical town of Shechem, is a hotspot of Palestinian terrorist activity. It is the same Shechem that dealt unwisely with the children of Jacob (Israel), and ended up triggering their wrath (Genesis 34).

Local Jews blocked every exit from Shechem, demanding that the Palestinian Authority hand over the terrorist who last Wednesday perpetrated a car-ramming attack at a checkpoint outside the town, killing two IDF soldiers – Staff Sgt. Eliya Hilel (20) and Staff Sgt. Diego Shvisha Harsaj (20).

The assailant immediately fled into Shechem and turned himself over to Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces.

Channel 14 News correspondent Hillel Baton Rosen said the IDF and Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) initially believed the PA would hand over the terrorist in the spirit of cooperation. But instead, they let him go and aided him in evading capture by the Israelis.

The IDF has not resumed its manhunt for the terrorist, and local Jewish residents believe they can help by preventing anyone from exiting Shechem. They also demand justice.

According to online news service HaKol HaYehudi (The Jewish Voice), Eliya Hilel’s mother called for the siege of Shechem: “We will lay siege to Shechem until the terrorist is captured, dead or alive. I call on everyone to join this righteous demonstration so that justice will be done.”

IDF soldiers at the Shechem checkpoints reportedly encouraged the civilian demonstrators, agreeing that the best course of action was to halt all traffic flowing out of the town.

Yossi Dagan, head of the Samaria Regional Council, said on Monday that the IDF should take into custody the Palestinian Authority governor of Shechem until the terrorist is handed over.

“The Palestinian Authority is a terrorist organization, just like the Nazis of Hamas. They [Hamas] are Nazis with a green band on their heads, and these [Palestinian Authority] are Nazis in suits,” said Dagan. “If the State of Israel has even a modicum of national honor, the terrorist in a suit known as the ‘Governor of Nablus,’ this abomination who sheltered and then abetted the escape of the murderer of our soldiers, must be arrested immediately.”
