The Book of Psalms consists of 150 prayers that cover the full range of human emotions. No matter what we are feeling or what feelings we want to put into words, there is always a psalm that can help us formulate our thoughts and find the right words to pray. Psalms are traditionally recited during times of war and other difficult moments.
War psalms
Some of the psalms, most notably those penned by King David, were written in the midst of war. Others were written while he was hiding in a dark cave, fearful that the next moment would bring death. Some express regret and fear, lamenting bad decisions and missed opportunities; others describe overwhelming joy and jubilation.
The Book of Psalms, Hebrew “Sefer Tehillim,” is a cornerstone of Jewish prayer. Although Judaism teaches that anyone can speak to God at any time, in any language, and with any word, the Psalms offer an ancient, time-tested way to connect with the Almighty. The Jewish people recited the beautiful verses in their most intimate and vulnerable moments.
