
There is a youth awakening currently taking place in Israel. Throughout the past week, a storm of mass protests has clouded over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Many Israelis have been demonstrating for months calling upon the government to address widespread corruption and for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remove himself from political life following his indictment on charges of fraud, bribery and breach of trust.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Israel in early March, subsequently birthing one of the most severe financial crises in the country’s brief 72-year history, a number of additional pressure groups have arisen and have organized anti-government protests. Restaurant workers, the self-employed and entertainers, as well as many others have organized their own struggles and even joined forces on certain occasions. With the advent of Israel’s second wave of coronavirus infections, and the imminent re-closing of businesses, beaches and cultural events, the financial situation of Israelis is only becoming more dire.
