The latest confrontation between Israel and US President Donald Trump’s Syria envoy Tom Barrack is not an isolated incident. Israel’s strike on the Abu al-Duhur base in northwestern Syria last Tuesday once again laid bare the differences between Jerusalem and the American envoy — regarding the future of Syria, Turkey’s role in the region, and Israel’s freedom of action.
Barrack responded to the strike in comparatively sharp terms. He said it had carried a “real risk” of rapid escalation into a direct confrontation between Israel, Turkey, and Syria. At the same time, he warned that the lack of communication between the parties could have led to an erroneous Turkish response. According to him, the US is now working on establishing a mechanism to prevent friction between Israel, Syria, and Turkey.
