Israeli forces killed a Hamas commander who also worked as a doctor at a Gaza hospital, the Israel Defense Forces said Monday.
The targeted strike took place Saturday in the Deir al-Balah area of central Gaza. The military identified the operative as Jamal Abu Aoun, a squad commander in Hamas’s military wing who was employed at Al-Yafa Hospital.
According to the IDF, Abu Aoun was not merely a medical worker caught in the fog of war. He allegedly used his civilian position while planning attacks against Israeli forces and the State of Israel, and had recently taken part in efforts to restore Hamas’s military capabilities in breach of the ceasefire.
The army described the case as another example of Hamas embedding its war machine inside civilian life — turning hospitals, humanitarian roles and protected spaces into operational shields.
🔴 DOCTOR OR TERRORIST? The IDF eliminated a Hamas terrorist who operated as a hospital doctor, Jamal Abu Aoun.

This is Hamas’s standard mode of operation, often missed or deliberately concealed by the international mainstream media. The terror group gains military concealment and then waits for the world to blame Israel when the disguise is exposed.
Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of exploiting medical facilities and civilian infrastructure throughout the war in Gaza, arguing that the group’s use of protected environments is central to its survival strategy.
Abu Aoun’s killing underscores the challenge Israel faces in Gaza: a battlefield where the uniform is optional, the civilian title is useful, and the military target often arrives with a hospital badge.
