Why the recognition of ‘Palestine’ exposes Israel’s foreign policy failure.

At the end of the Palestine Summit at the United Nations, Israel appears to have suffered a painful defeat. Israel, which began the war on October 7 as a victim of the Hamas attack, now finds itself in problematic territory—with 156 states recognizing the independence of a Palestinian state. Decades of Israeli efforts to prevent such recognition have been undone as a new reality has emerged.

While previously it was mainly non-aligned and Arab states that recognized “Palestine,” now the states of the free world—enlightened democracies with international weight—have spoken: France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Spain, and a series of other EU members—countries referred to in diplomatic jargon as “like-minded.” Not only have they recognized a Palestinian state—they are the ones leading this move at the United Nations.

The assessment is that even the few democracies that have not yet recognized a Palestinian state will do so sooner or later.
