Israel was one of the first countries to implement a firm response to the coronavirus pandemic. Borders were closed and flights were barred from entering the country. Until May, Israel was a global role model in the fight against COVID-19. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had the situation under control.

By mid-May, Israel was registering just 30 new infections per day. Because of the declining numbers, the government lifted curfews and other restrictions. Bibi's popularity peaked.

Now, however, over 6,000 new infections have been reported in the past few weeks. In total, 30,162 Israelis have tested positive for COVID-19, and 338 people have died of the disease. The second wave if upon us. What went wrong?

The town of Beitar Illit is again under full lockdown.

While people blamed the virus for the first wave of restrictions and curfews, they are pointing an accusatory finger at the government over new measure that threaten to harm the local economy.
